Chad O'Neil — Founder & Operator

Chad O’Neil is the Founder and Operator of SkateTech Skate Sharpening & Equipment Repair with over 25 years of sharpening and customizing experience at the recreational, junior, and professional levels.

Chad's passion for customizing equipment and sharpening skates started at the age of 12 and that passion accelerated at the age of 15 when he started helping around the local rink, learning the ropes from several of his mentors. A year later, he would officially get hired by the rink where he played youth and high school hockey and learned how to sharpen skates.

After playing a season of Junior hockey, O'Neil would begin working in hockey retail for Johnny Mac's Sporting Goods in St. Louis, MO as the Head of Hockey Sales & Operations from 2005-2011. During his tenure, he would help turn Johnny Mac's into one of the top hockey retail stores in the Midwest.

In 2008, Chad was hired by St. Louis Blues legends Kelly Chase and Jeff Brown as the Head Equipment Manager of the Jr. A St. Louis Bandits of the North American Hockey League (NAHL) for 2 seasons. During that time, he was named Head Equipment Manager for 2 NAHL Top Prospects Tournaments, won the Chuck Robertson Cup in 2008, and again reached the Chuck Robertson Cup Finals in 2009.

Following his success with the St. Louis Bandits, Chad joined the St. Louis Blues of the National Hockey League in 2011 as an Assistant Equipment Manager. During his time, Chad would serve as the Equipment Manager for the Blues for 6 straight Traverse City Top Prospects Tournaments (2011-2017). The Blues would go on to win the Central Division Championship in 2011-2012 and again in 2014-2015 and would make it to the Western Conference Finals in 2015-2016. One of Chad's most memorable moments with the Blues came in 2017 when they played in their first Winter Classic, defeating the Chicago Blackhawks 4-1 at Busch Stadium.

After 6 NHL seasons, O'Neil took his knowledge and passion for hockey equipment and started SkateTech Skate Sharpening and Equipment Repair in the summer of 2017 while still working part time as the Head Equipment Manager for CarShield AAA Hockey of the North American Prospects Hockey League (NAPHL) (2017-2019) and Maryville University Saints (ACHA DII) in St. Louis, MO (2017). Today, SkateTech is the only professional full-service shop in the greater St. Louis area and continues to become one of the most recognized small shops in the hockey industry for their knowledge and strong attention to detail.
